Day 1 Arrival in Tbilisi
Arrival in Tbilisi International Aipoer. Transfer to the hotel.Overnight in a hoten in Tbilisi.
Day 2 Tbilisi
A free day in Tbilisi. You can explore this vibrant capital easily by foot on your own. Wonder in the old districts of the city which are structured like terraces, as well as take a walk in the narrow streets to enjoy colorful houses, patterned balconies and wonderful samples of modern architecture. Start your walk from Metekhi church (13th century) facing the magnificent views over old Tbilisi. A stroll along winding little streets takes you to the main sights of the city. Afterwards enjoy the panoramic views of the whole town and through the ancient Narikala fortress (4th century). And why not take a bath in the historical domed sulphur bath area- connected with the name of our city. Finally the Golden Fund of the historical museum will prove the fact that Georgia is truly the land of the Golden Fleece (museum is closed on Mondays). Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.
Day 3 Tbilisi - Telavi via David Gareja
You will start from Tbilisi in the morning and drive to David Gareja cave complex (6th century) located in a stark, semi-desert landscape. After seeing Lavra Monastery we walk up for about 50 minutes to Udabno Monastery to enjoy its wonderful painted caves and dramatic views across to Azerbaijan. Then drive to Telavi. Dinner and overnight in Telavi in a family hotel. ??400m (walking time 2, 5 hours)
Day 4 Telavi-Alaverdi-Gremi-Kvareli-Sighnaghi-Tbilisi
In the morning we visit local farmer’s market. Continue to visit Alaverdi cathedral (11th century) and Gremi fortress (16th century). Lunch at the local family, where we become familiar with the local peasants` life and taste delicious homemade food. Continue to Sighnaghi, 18th century beautiful fortified town. Take a pleasant walk in the town. Then, drive back to Tbilisi. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.
Day 5 Tbilisi-Mtskheta-Sachkhere-Chiatura-Kutaisi
We drive to visit the ancient capital and religious center of Georgia – Mtskheta (3000 years old) and see its historical places: Jvari church (6th century) and impressive Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century). Both Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Then, we drive through the mining town Chiatura. In which, there are about 20 soviet cable cars, still active nowadays. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Kutaisi.
Day 6 Kutaisi-Gelati-Akhaltsikhe
In the morning, visit local market of Kutaisi. Then visit Gelati Cathedral (12th c) – one of the earliest academies in Europe (UNESCO World heritage site), and the splendid Bagrati Cathedral (11th c). Continue to Akhaltsikhe.Visit Rabath castle - recently renovated, where we`ll get acquainted with rich history of the region and will travel in the past. Dinner and overnight in Akhaltsikhe in a family hotel.
Day 7 Akhaltsikhe-Vardzia-Akhaltsikhe
Drive to Vardzia and visit the 12th century magnificent cave town complex, one of the highlights of the trip. It stretches over half a kilometer along the river Mtkvari and has 19 tiers. There used to be about 3000 caves. It`s got a church hewn out in rock with amazing 12th century frescos. The complex also includes dwellings quarters, small hall-type churches, refectories, wine cellars, pharmacy, etc. Afterwards we drive back to Akhaltsikhe. On the way, photo-stop at Khertvisi fortress (10th century). Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Akhaltsikhe.
Day 8 Akhaltsikhe-Gori-Upliststikhe-Stepantsminda
In the morning we will drive to visit the town of Gori – the heart of Kartli region and its historical places: Uplistsikhe Cave Town (1st millennium BC), that’s the place where the Great Silk Road used to pass. Photo stop near Stalin’s museum. Then we will drive up the Georgian military highway. On the way visit Ananuri architectural complex (17th century).The drive is very scenic through high Caucasus Mountains. Overnight in Stepantsminda in a hotel.
Day 9 Stepantsminda-Gergeti Church-Stepantsminda
From Stepantsminda a 1.5 hour walk up through beautiful valleys and woodland leads us to Gergeti Trinity Church located at 2170m. Weather permitting you may catch a glimpse of one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus - Mt Kazbegi (5047m). Overnight in Stepantsminda in a hotel. ?? 470m (walking time 2,5hours)
Day 10 Stepantsminda-Tbilisi
In the morning depart from Stepantsminda to Tbilisi.Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.
Day 11 Departure
